My name is Rick Bain and I have been a Registered Respiratory Therapist for 27 years. I have been employed with Acuity Specialty Hospital for the past 13 years. I am an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Navy.
I love being a Respiratory Therapist because it is a great way to make a living helping people. I get to interact with some wonderful patients, in a safe, clean environment and help them regain the ability to breath better. It feels really great to take a patient who is on full ventilatory support and play an integral role in weaning them from that machine and watching them regain the ability breath on their own, come off the vent, and be able to speak again. Eventually they will gain their strength back, and be able to walk and interact with their loved ones. When the patient is discharged from our facility and they shake our hands or give us hugs it makes it really worthwhile!
I love working for Acuity Specialty Hospital because we are afforded the opportunity to perform our jobs in an autonomous environment with support from physicians and administration to allow us to give the utmost care to our patients and families. Acuity is more a family than a corporation. Nursing, Respiratory, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Dieticians work side by side for the benefit of the patient. We communicate well and that keeps us all on the same page as a tremendous health care team.
As an employee owner I take more pride in my work. I feel as though my name is attached to every patient that comes through our door. I take all of our patient outcomes more personally. I feel that I have more of a responsibility than just a regular employee.
